Why Janet Jackson Is Still That Deal

As long as Janet’s been doing this entertainment thing (1982 was her first album), she’s never fallen off. It’s a trip, because she’s had a lot of diversity in her life: the meanest daddy in the world; having to emerge from the shadow of an older brother who’s widely-regarded as the best entertainer of all time; accusations of too much blatant sexuality; a white man exposing her one of her breasts on the biggest platform of sports entertainment in the country; and, let’s not forget, age.

Still, like her new album title implies, Janet’s still doing it like she’s 20 years old. These are my reasons why Janet is still that deal.

1.) She continues to keep up that bangin’ body. Do y’all realize that she looks just as sexy now as she did in 1989 with the “Rhythm Nation” joint? Shorty’s technically 40 years old, but she’s killing the majority of women that I’ve seen – celebrities and otherwise – between 25-35.

2.) She uses her age to her advantage in that sexiness. Even though she has the looks of a younger woman, her sexuality has a maturity that makes you know that she has the skills, imagination, and confidence that only comes with time.

3.) In both her music and her sexuality, she manages to maintain her own flavor, while still finding a way to keep up with what’s going on. Her new album has songs with Khia and Nelly, but she still makes sure that the songs are A.) Still her own, instead of show-stealing episodes by the cameo artists, and B.) Still sound like Janet Jackson songs as far as their aesthetic, instead of songs by the featured new jack. Also, her new album essentially sounds like updated versions of her older music – just another sign that she never left.

4.) Also, on a personal level, she got with Jermaine Dupri. While I’m jealous of that, that makes me realize that as sexual as she is, that she really does emphasize true love in the Hollywood world of pointless relationships.

I’ll add more as I think of it, because I’m definitely forgetting some things. In the meantime, leave comments on anything you think I forgot.

I really like the write up you did on Janet. Regardless of what people think, she still manages to to storm the game. If you know what I mean. I really am enjoying this album from her.
